how many hours?

really quick newbie question here:

approximately, how many hours would it take from absolute scratch (including learning programation), to make a 3d environement and moving around in the environement using 2 touch analog stick (1 moving, 1 looking)

the environemtn would be like a simple house, with simple furnitures

and also which one would be easier android or windows.

thanks!

Somewhere between 1 hour and 60 days.

@LaneFox gave a silly answer because it’s a silly question. There’s absolutely no way a person can estimate how long it will take someone else to do something.

People learn at different rates. Some people want to use free plugins, others paid, others write everything themselves. Even if a person has done a similar project before, it can be difficult to estimate how long it will take them to do it again.

Also, the word simple is misleading. What is a simple house? And simple furniture? Are they just cubes, or do they actually look like what they’re supposed to be? Are they textured? Is there lighting?

If “programation” is anything like programming, that’s a whole other thing to have to figure out. How much programation do you need to know? What languages are you already familiar with?

Only you can guess how long it will take you to do something. And even then, only after knowing as much detail (or making assumptions about unknowns) as possible. When you have a good guess, the only good advice I can have for you is to double that number, and that’s probably closer to how long it’ll take.

thank you Schneider21, i obviously dont have the competences to realise that my question was silly, your answer was a lot more helpfull
i am not sure if you are telling me that you wil never be able to guess the number of hours, but at the same time you are asking me more details, thats good for me hehe
so i m normal learner
the programming will be done in unity
no lights!
no textures!
furnitures in simple cubes
also , i am not looking for exact time, i understand you dont have all the information
is it more like 20, 200 or more?
thanks!!

Once again we cannot truly give you an answer based off of this information. You claim to be a normal learner, but past experience plays a very big role. Picking up your first language may take a considerable amount of time, but picking up subsequent languages is much faster.

I believe the upper bound of @LaneFox 's answer is much closer to a realistic amount for a newcomer. Not that you will be fantastic with Unity after only two months, but you will be able to build your own projects from scratch.

It’s considered good etiquette to not be sarcastic and churlish when asking people for help, too, by the way.

I wasn’t saying you don’t have competencies. I’m saying you’re asking a general question that is very difficult for others to answer. If you were asking how a coroutine works, that’s something we can give you a straight-forward answer on. But this is something that’s different for everyone.

When you’re starting out with no experience, it doesn’t matter what you’re referring to… estimating time for the project will be near impossible. I’ve never put a new roof on a house, or performed an appendectomy… so even with the input of an experienced contractor or surgeon, I can’t really predict how long it would take me to do those things.

You have a ton of learning to do, and that’s fine. But you’re asking about stuff that should be way down the road, is all. I guess to answer your question, in a way, would be to say that to get to the point where you’re ready to build an app for Android or Windows that involves touch controls, an FPS controller, and basic geometry, I’d expect you should have several hundred hours of learning under your belt first. Let’s just call it 500.

So if you can set aside 4 hours every single day to learn, maybe 4 months down the road you should start building what you’re talking about. This is a total guess based off of none of the things I think are super important, like aptitude and attitude.

hey schneider21, thank you for the help, i have a good idea of the amount of work that i will have to put into this now, i will slowly start watching the videos and reading the tutorials and decide then if its worth it
thanks again

With heavy use of the asset store one hour is a reasonable time line. Download some houses. Download a character controller. Download some models. Hit build.

If you want to do everything yourself 60 days would be pretty optimistic.
