First off, let me just say that I have absolutely no idea where this question fits into the forums, so mods/admins please put it somewhere else, if it doesn’t fit into the Graphics section.
Now, onto my question. I also know little to nothing about the pixels per unit option for sprites in unity, and how it is used (main reason why this whole question was asked in the first place).
So what exactly would be the most logical “pixels per unit” size strictly for 2D pixel sprites? Keep in mind that most of my sprites will be pretty small, at around 50x50 pixels max. Unity automatically sets every knew sprite I add, to 100 pixels/unit. Should I change it?
Thanks in advance for all helpful and generally good answers.
Depends on what you want exactly, but typically a pixels per unit value that results in your main sprites being around 1 unit in size is good (taking into account the physics engine and stuff). So in your case, 50. If you need strictly 1:1 pixel perfect sprites, then some people advocate a PPU value of 1, although I don’t think that’s very common these days with so many screen resolutions, and scaling usually looks fine (especially on high dpi screens).
I generally try to regard 1 unit as 1 meter, so character sprites tend to be between 1 and two units high. If the character is 32 pixels high and around 2 meters high, that would mean 16 pixel per unit. There are some who recommend using 1 pixel per unit but I quickly found out that it requires changing the physics settings.
