How much memory should my models take up?

I’m making a game that uses a lot of models in it. I’ve been told that you need to keep the poly count low on models so that they don’t slow down the game. How low should I aim for?
For example: I’m trying to create rocks similar to the ones in Firewatch*,* which look like this:

These rocks look rounded and natural, but the game still runs well.

My rocks are much more simple, and look like this:

When I put them into my game, they look very angular and unnatural. So I’m wondering how I can make them look more smooth and rounded without making my game much slower. I’m using blender if that helps.

Thank you.

I bet these rocks in Firewatch look like your version above. Textures are playing a heavy role in creating the perfect illusion. The keyword is texture baking. Check out this Blender tutorial on YouTube:

There’s really no “magic number” of polys. It all depends on the complexity of the game, scripts, lighting etc… of course good textures can fake high-quality easily.

Are you using Occlusion Culling?
