ok so i was thinking of making a game like stronghold but a little more real, i know nothing about coding so i was just going hire my scripters and model makers, How much would all of this cost? Thank you.
(Please don’t say learn to code cause i tried and keep failing, but i can make models)
Many thousands of dollars. If you own your home, you can usually use it as collateral for a bank loan. If you are willing to bet your house in a very literal sense on your ability to manage a game project, go for it.
An example: The initial design for the game characters in an MMORPG were loosely based on the Final Fantasy chibi animes. Of course, the designer knew that he could not use those particular ones. So he hired a college student studying graphics art at $20/hour. He and a friend and the artist communicated using skype. The artist is living in the pacific while one designer was is Asia and the other here in the US Pacific Coast. It has now taken almost 30 hours and lots of sketches to almost finalize the basic style for the characters in this proposed game. That’s ONE character. Now it has to be modelled, rigged, UV Textured, weighted, etc., etc.
I read that the AAA titles are now costing close to $20,000,000 to produce.
Makes me wonder how much it took for Square Enix to produce Final Fantasy III. $15.99 is probably a good indication of how much it cost them to make it. The Lego MMO is closer to $30 and they already have all the assets from their previous releases.
Browse www.gamasutra.com and read some of the post-mortems of game projects. There’s lots of them. If you know what tripped them up them you can avoid the same situation and hopefully find success.
I guess most developers/publishers wish you were correct. They wish they could make a AAA game (no MMO) for $1 mil. Of course I am talking about PC/Consoles games.
A small indie game is typically $100,000 - $500,000. See Braid, World of Goo, etc. Normal big-studio games go way over $1M. MMOs are more like $50M-$100M.
If time were money, then I’d be making money right now.
If I’m not on the forums…will I earn money?
Only in fairy land.
Last time I checked, Time is a measure of moments passing. Money is a physical object turned into the theory of currency and value.
How time = money is far beyond me. That’s like saying Milk = Spaceship.
Milk does not equal Spaceship.
However, according to random internet idiots, it’ll cost you $100,000, because time = money, free costs you a lot, and 0 = 100,000.
I must be in trouble with Johnny Law, because I have learned everything myself to create games, and I’ve spent $0 on the learning side. Yes, I’ve spent over $3000 on artwork, but that’s because I am not really an artist, I am just accidentally a game designer who learned how to…art…
I don’t think anything has ever cost $1 BILLION USD.
If something (game or movie) had, I’d be really really surprised. That isn’t a lot of money, that is a RIDICULOUS amount of money. If avatar cost 500million, that’s double avatar, and avatar war hundreds of times more than some movies/games would ever be.
