How should I set up my camera for a total war-style project?

My project has a campaign mode and a battle mode.

I’m talking about the campaign mode, the campaign mode is my scene that features 3D terrain of the whole world.

In this scene the player manages his country, declares war, moves armies, makes alliances…

I have seen cameras from games such as Europa Universalis, Imperial Glory and Total War and their camera looks “cartographic”/board wargame/risk, except its not 2D.

My goal is to imitate the camera view of world/campaign mode from Total War.

My intuition says that the camera should be orthographic.

But I am not sure did the makers of Total War and games similar to Total War use orthographic or perspective?
Would perspective view be better or orthographic view?

And what rotation should the camera be?
The camera can not be set 90 degrees of course, because my project is not 2D and the aim is to get the camera view like when you play Total War or any other game that strongly resembles Total War.

I mentioned Total War so people would be familiar with the type of the project.
It does not necessarily need to be exact camera like in Total War, it could be something similar to it.

The summary question is, should I use perspective or orthographic and what camera rotation should I use to imitate Total war-like camera.
I have currently set my camera’s projection to orthographic and camera’s rotation to X= 60 Y = -180 Z= 0. Are my current camera settings a good choice or not? If not, how can I make it better?

It all depends on the specific design of your game. Look to games like total war for inspiration, but also consider what your art style is going to be… like I assume realistic 3D models or something close, so you should probably use a perspective camera to make the 3D “effect” of having perspective. But if you were gonna do something more like 2D sprite billboards for “units” or whatever, then it might be fine to do orthographic.

Perhaps even an isometric view could work for a 2D or 3D version of this type of game… it all comes to how closely you want to imitate other games, and how original your art style is going to be.

Anyway, I think the camera in most (if not all) total war games is perspective, like you see from the blue arrows in this screenshot from total war attila how it has the rendering done from the perspective of the camera:

The campaign mode can not be isometric because you can not make a world map curved to 45 degrees.

I am strictly speaking about the campaign mode, not battle mode.

Oh ok so during the “overworld” looking at territories and stuff like that? I couldn’t tell you, haven’t played a whole lot of total war, and can’t remember attila :X

It might have been orthographic with a specific view range on screen… I don’t remember exactly.
