How To Achieve Fog Effect Like 'Into The Dead'..

Hi Everyone,

Need some help on an effect or effects on which me and and my buddies are working and trying to achieve them. Basically, we are creating a Zombie game targeted for iOS devices. Much of the work, mechanics and game-design is fixed, but still we are stuck on some things. The effects that we want to achieve can be seen in the game, ‘Into The Dead’ which is available on Android as well as on iOS.

Since there was a problem uploading the screenshots of ‘Into The Dead’ on Unity Answers over here, I have provided Dropbox Download Links for the same.

Below are the links to the screenshots:

Please, have a look at them carefully.

Firstly, from the images above, we are trying to achieve and bring out that exact FOG effect. We have tried Unity’s default fog, but aren’t getting the desired results. Plus, can’t use Unity’s fog because the FPS rate drops down like anything on devices. It becomes too laggy.

The second effect is : If you play the game (Into The Dead), you’ll observe that when you see a Zombie coming towards you/player from a distance, what is visible at first is just the Silhouette and the yellowish glowing eyes of the Zombie which makes it look eerie. When the Zombie comes within a specific distance/range of the player, it’s textures/details starts becoming visible and the yellowish glowing effect of the eyes begins to fade and and when the zombie is very close, the glowing effect disappears.

We are trying to achieve this effect of the textures becoming visible only after a certain/specific range/distance and also by considering the influence of other effects like Fog, Lighting, etc.

Can anyone please guide us or at least point us what we need to do in order to achieve what we are after.

Any help from you guys is as always, a great support and is appreciated.

And, Thanks In Advance!!

You can calculate distance between player and zombie. If zombie in certain range change textures > you can dynamically change textures using Resources.load or attaching textures to a zombie prefab. You can build shaders to make an outline on the zombie and change that at a certain range.

For the fog, you can use the shuriken particle system with low level detail for textures.

we are trying to achieve and bring out that exact FOG effect.

A : you can use smoke texture through particles

what is visible at first is just the Silhouette and the yellowish glowing eyes of the Zombie which makes it look eerie

A: you can use point light and self illumination under the shader

zombie is very close, the glowing effect disappears.

A: you can control point light with the scripting

Best of luck
