How To: Alphabetically Sort your Hierarchy-Unity 5

Having trouble navigating your huge list of elements in your build’s hierarchy? This can be extremely time consuming and seriously damaging to your workflow. But there is hope. Here’s how to Alphabetically sort your list without having to script:

  • click edit>preferences

  • go to General tab and set ‘Enable Alpha Numeric Sorting’

  • When you return to the ‘Hierarchy Tab’ there will be a new option added to the right of the search box called ‘Transform Child Order’

  • Select ‘Alphabetical Sort’…and you are done.

If you are working with UI your transform ordering in the hierarchy tab is very important NOT to be sorted by alphabet… Keep that in mind.

Very true, however, most individual’s workflow mindset are alphabetically targeted. For instance, I have a mainGUI, multiGUI, campGUI, fallGUI, and opsGUI for my FPS project all contained in an empty gameObject called userGUI…have had no issues with Alphabetic ordering during execution.
