How to bring in animation from C4D with collada?

So I was reading in some place that Unity can import animation from collada .dae files without converting them to FBX in unity 3. But I can’t seem to get this to work. I can’t get Unity to bring in bones from a .dae file with either c4d or maya. Has anyone imported character animation with a .dae file?

The reason I wanted to try and export animation from c4d with a .dae is because you can get phong breaks on models into unity if you export as .dae, but you can’t get phong breaks into unity if you export as fbx. So you can’t export a character with both animation and phong breaks on it from c4d. Which has always been a deal breaker for me with c4d unity pipeline. But if there was someway to get the animations into unity via collada now, then you could get a character with both phong breaks and animation on it into unity from c4d.

if you can import that dae file successfully into Maya, then I would like to see the file. I have heard about problem importing dae files into Unity, but I haven’t seen bug reports with problematic files.

Unity 3.0 still used FBX SDK to import dae files, but FBX SDK has been improved a lot in COLLADA support.

Paulius,

In the end animation for fbx and collada will always be problematic when importing into any engine …This forum and many others have the same or similar problems. Because of the nature of what needs to be achieved in animating even the most simple character. So Paulius this is what i was trying to get at when i spoke about fbx and collada formats!
