I’m creating a videogame about the ww1, but I’m undecided between a childish game and a more serious one.
I would like to know how I should choose between the two
Well first ask yourself how much money you want to spend on your game, second is it a hobby or do you plan to sell it?
I think the above questions are helpful things to consider, but either way, for the best fit a project should start as a mechanical concept (understand the meaning of and strive for an MVP), and any stylistic elements that begin to emerge as a natural complement to the mechanics are usually the best choice to be adopted. Same goes for narrative.
If you’re at this point and are still on the fence, do some science and see what the reactions are to the same game concept presented in different styles or with different moods. If making money isn’t a priority, your amount of excitement for one or the other holds more weight.
This^.
Focusing on aesthetics/tone before gameplay mechanics is a fatty putting on make-up. You can’t just cover it up!
Think of the base idea, design or concept of the game and base it of that.
A WW1 game usually has high graphics at least the new and popular ones have.
So I have two options
- High poly following the others.
- Low poly being very unique.
After this u look at your resources. Thus includes your manpower, experience, assets, etc
- If u are the only one then building a high poly, high end game is very ambitious and chances are that u will soon get frustrated and hot the game.
But in the case of low poly games the time for designibg assets and doing level design, etc is a lot easier and feasible for only one person. - Next up your experience.
If your planned game is your first game then you probably shouldn’t do high poly, high graphics, instead design the core gameplay stuff. This is a very popular advice. However on the other side of u have a lot of experience in AAA game development then u will be at an advantage in making your own game
3.Assets.
If u will be making your own assets the easiest way is low poly. But if u have a team or are ready to spend money then high poly is also an option.
An important note is that when building high poly games people are expecting the game to also be high quality with great gameplay. Nobody really wants a high poly Mario even if it seems like a good idea.
Also some other things to consider are your system, time span, marketing budget, budget in general.
If u have a very slow system with only 4GB ram u probably will have a lot of problems running a high poly game let alone develop one.
Time span is also important as if u want to meet a certain deadline then low poly is the best option
Budget is important if you are buying assets and marketing budget is very important to let people know about the game.
I wish u all the best if u are creating a game. And I hope u choose the right way and game is a success.
