Hey, sometime in the future I wan’t to collaborate but there are many factors that worries me, I’m wondering if people could share what they think of these issues:
What if someone isn’t working to a high enough standard? Like say some one is giving bad assets what do I do? I don’t want to share profit with someone whose assets are unusable.
Deciding on the share? If someone is say working 1/2 an hour a week they don’t deserve the same amount as someone who works.
Who owns the game and IP? If I made a game I may want to make a sequel but then what if collaborators don’t think it is a good idea am I entitled to go ahead because it was my idea in the first place?
4.If there is a sequel and collaborators are not part of it do they get a profit share?
What do you think the “correct” answers to my questions are?
“Fire” them, cruel, but if it’s gotta be done it’s gotta be done
a) ALWAYS before you even think about them joining ask for previous work, if you see it as good, you and they should know what their standards.
Either
a) At the end tally the work and the quality and decide on payment (state this in terms of joining)
b) Keep a fair sort of score
CLEARLY set yourself up as the leader of the team. It is then your choice
I would say not, as they did not contribute any work. It is like someone leaving a company and expecting payment for the new games they make just because they were “on team”
Many points you bring up would just be taken care of in crystal clear contracts to be put up in the first place.
What always helps on that scenario is to put up a first test asset. You can decide how long you would expect it to take, what comparable quality you expect and what kind of cost you would have estimated. That serves as a great judgement base for both parties. How does the communication work, how well does the person handle crits. That way each party can get out of any future contract obligation without getting hurt financially or emotinally too much
Well that should be negotiated pretty quickly. Think about who does which work and that needs to be reflected in the share as well.
Would be a contract issue
Same thing
Here’s an interesting insight in a similar scenario that ACTUALLY happened:
Point is, you seem to ask how you get the most out of free work of someone else, kinda ? In the end if you just hired a freelancer it would be all yours with none of these problems above. Collaboration with profit share is always a weird way of working, if you don’t know the person long enough, you’re most often up for a treat.
Afterall I haven’t been able to make any actual money from all of the countless collaboration partners I once had. So I’m only doing this kind of work if the partner has a serious track record under his belt or I know and respect a lot (hi daniele )
