How to improve the quality of this game?

Hey everyone! Today I published this game : Play Battle Tanks, a free online game on Kongregate

It’s the first “real” game I uploaded, I’m saying this because my other work I made just for training purposes. But I still feel like I’m not adding certain elements to make it feel like a real game. I want to make a sequel to this game so if you guys could throw me some pointers as to areas where I can improve the quality that would help me out a lot. Thanks!

Well it seems like your game only has 1 level and that takes about 5 seconds to complete so it could do with some more content. You should also add a tutorial.

I think it needs better art, I think a cartoon style would fit nicely.

It does have more than one level, you just have to beat missions to unlock them apparently.
Played the first two levels, off hand I would agree with TylerPerry that it needs better graphics and that a cartoon look would probably be fitting and fairly easy to pull off with what you have already. Also the tank model should be more defined in which is the front and back end, that would make it a lot easier to control in my opinion. Maybe have a particle effect when the tank shells hit instead of just disappearing. A few more sound effects here and there, maybe some music ( tons out there for free, just look for ones with a CC license ). That’s all I got, good game keep it up.

OK, great little game but you did ask.

It’s hard to tell which way the tank is facing.
Tanks need textures, or more chunky cartoony models.
Sound effects for collisions, movement, level selection.
Improved arena textures.

Only show the end of level marker after the barrels have been collected.
Animate the barrels and put pointers to them, also you could change them to diamonds as they are a pick up item.

Guide to the control scheme.
You could also simplify the scheme to just up down left right and have the tank turn and move.

Level completion sparklers, sfx, graphics, score, time, bonuses.

Leaderboard.

Keep up the great work!

You could have a couple of tutorial levels e.g. 1 Move to exit, 2 +Shoot other tank, 3 +collect barrels

Thanks everyone for the tips, I think I know what direction I need to move in for the sequel now haha.

Graphics
As everyone else said, a little improvement on the graphics could help, both to make it more appealing and a little easier to play.

Gameplay
The tanks are pushovers. Their AI makes the easiest strategy to win simply to sit behind a block and wait for the tank to crash into it, then peek around the corner til you find the spot where you can shoot the tank’s treads, but the tank’s projectiles hit the wall.

I’d also remove the ability to destroy barrels. It feels cheap for a simple missed shot to make you lose. All of the time I shot the barrels, I didn’t notice that I’d actually shot at one. The care needed for taking the shots rewarded the cheap strategy of just exploiting the tanks dumb AI rather than the riskier and more (potentially) more fun maneuvers.

You should also add more variation to the enemies. I played up to level 7 and each level felt the same as the last. Throw in more challenge to keep things interesting by adding different kinds of enemies (fast tanks, dodging tanks, etc) and maybe environmental hazards.

Powerups and different weapons are also a must.

Sound
Add more. A music track or two (with a mute button) and more sound effects to increase the feedback of the fights and make things more interesting.

no, it has 10 levels - you have to collect the barrels and move into the red circle

yeah - the art direction is currently at the “prototype” stage and is only adequate as placeholders for the “real” graphics
