How to make 2d animation in a mesh

I know how to create 2d animation in unity 2d project which is just dragging texture step to hierarchy, but how to create animation with texture step in mesh? I have tried it but nothing appears finally I select the object then open animation tab and drag texture into animation tab and it automatically creates sprite component but nothing happens to mesh when played. If you know please let me know
