How to make a player model with interchangeable clothing and multiple layers of clothing?

I am trying to make a low poly player model similar to unturned 4.0, and am using blender to create the player and clothing. My problem is I do not know how to prevent the player’s body from clipping through the clothes as well as other clothes clipping through overlapping clothes. I want the player to be able to wear a shirt, jacket, vest, backpack, pants, and boots at the same time. I have heard about “shape keys” but am not sure what that is or if would even apply here. Can someone please give some guidance on this?

PS: If I posted this in the wrong forum can staff please move it to the correct one instead of deleting it? Thank you.

I answered a similar question not too long ago:

…where I stated that I believe that the common way to deal with overlapping meshes from adding clothing is to disable or mask-out geometry that is supposed to be hidden by the clothes.

how would I go about hiding the body / overlapped clothing layers by masking them out?
