How to make an object with a trail go back the way it came from

Hello, I am working on a 2D game in which the player is an invisible sprite with a trailRenderer, making the player look like it’s a snake. For the death animation, I was thinking of making the player quickly go back the path it came from (kind of like a snake recoiling). But with trails, simply moving the player back position-wise would make it overlap with the existing trail.

I was thinking of stopping the camera and making time go backwards, is that viable? Or even possible? Are there other solutions?
