How to make animated characters?

I wouldve posted this in external tools but hardly anyone looks there.
I have 3ds Max and I would like toknow how youmake a object with those @walk animations. I dont know what it is called so if someone could direct me somewhere?

In Maya, this is what you do.
I know you have 3DS Max, but maybe it is similar.
Let’s say in total you have 500 frames of animation. In Max you would do idle for frames 1-100, then on the same animation line you would do a walk animation from frames 120-150, then run from frames 170-200.
export and import (fob maybe) into unity, then you split the animation in Unity and say I have idle 1-100, walk 120-150, run 170-200 and it will make new animation files then you choose from there?
