How to make NPC head face PC?

NPC standing in one place playing idle animation. PC walks up to the NPC from some direction. How do you make the NPC head turn and face the PC? Is there a way to override the rig for a specific bone to do this dynamically?

This is in 3D context if it makes any difference.

I ended up manually pointing the head bone transform rotation towards the PC direction in LateUpdate(), overriding the animator idle rotation. Seems to work fine, not sure if there is a better solution.
