How to make shadow softness independent of resolution (-actually soft)?

Hi,
i like the softness here (512 as shadow resolution):

but when i set the shadow resolution higher, shadows get harder, even though i intended to use ‘soft shadows’, which doesn’t seem correct (at 4096 they’re even almost identical to hard shadows).

So the blur seems to be dependent on pixels; is there any way to correct this?

I would still very much be interested in this.
