How do you actually create a sprite then a sprite sheet

Is each sprite in the sprite sheet drawn by hand, then put together.

Is there a computer program that you can draw the sprite with then easily modify it for the next sprite in the sprite sheet.

How is this done

use photoshop…make a box the size you need, like 32x32…duplicate the box and make enough for the rows and colls,or set the prefs for grids to the sprite size and insert your sprites

There are many ways to create sprite sheets. Photoshop as hodx mentioned is a great way. You can consider softwares like Illustrator and flash as well. They use vector graphics (as opposed to pixel) and have some in-built tools to help.

Also try using some 3rd party softwares to help with the sprite sheet creation process.

I personally use these 2 for my sprite sheet creations depending on the project’s needs:

Shoebox is multi-purpose while the SWF Spritesheet Creator is used mainly for conversion from swf files but is really simple to use.

Try both and see which one suits your needs more.

I tried out a lot of different plugins for Photoshop, GIMP, etc and they always fell a bit short of what I wanted. TexturePacker is what I finally found and really like. You can do simple imports for things like animation sheets or best fit for different assets. It also can compress further and optimize.
