How to prepare 3D model to animate in mecanim.

I followed a couple of tutorials and learned how to build a humanoid model’s bone structure in a 3d modelling application. But I didn’t watch the rest to rig my character. Do I also require to rig my character before I can animate it in mecanim or bones are enough? Thanks in advance.

1: You have to rig in the 3D Application.

2: You have to animate your character in the 3D APplication, since you can’t do much in Unity except simple animations of an objects. You can’t animate walk or run, etc…

3: Right after that, you can import your animated character in Unity and make clips for the different baked animations.
