Right- this always seems to happen to me- I spend months making something and putting a lot of effort into it, however the problem is that once I release it into the wild it gets seen by so few people- it depends of course on what/where it is- for example my flash games do ok, but when it comes to promoting my free unity3d games just to play em I’m crap.
I’ve submitted my game to some freewarez sites but that doesn’t seem to help much- how does one get exposure? maybe someone more successful can enlighten me.
spending 4-6 months coding/designing a game and then to have 5-6 people leave comments saying “oh, cool game” is NOT cool!!!
OK. Given that it’s 120 MB in size, you need to find people who are willing to sit through a big download. One of the things you may want to look at is IndieDB.com; that’s a good way to find an audience for a game like this at the start. But keep in mind that when the file’s that big, it needs to create a lot of excitement; strongly consider making a YouTube video, amongst other things, to show people more about the gameplay.
Ive made a couple youtube videos promoting my game, its still a work in progress but im trying to get an audience early on. As of now im just under 1,500 views on my first vid and 600 on my second with a third gameplay video and a backstory video on the way. my game is an fps so i just used all tags I could that would somehow lead to it. Im also planning to make a facebook group and teaser promo;s.
The problem with an FPS is you are competing against the big boys: Rage, Red Faction, Fallout etc. Its not that an inide cant do it you just need to offer something they are not getting elsewhere Preumbra
that’s a cool site thanks! submitted my game and awaiting admin authorization. Any other similar sites? (there are many freeware sites but few with actual communities like what I saw in IndieDB)
I think there are so many ‘free’ games out there that people are so thinly dispersed amongst the spectrum.
I’d suggest signing up to a few gamer forums and posting about your game, don’t say hey check out the game I made, rather use the approach ‘hey check this cool game I found’.
