how to publish an unity game

hi,

i´m coming from the autodesk-side (maya and zbrush)
and i´m interested to create an video-game based on the unity-engine.

i googled a lot, but there are so different statements about it…
and so i got some questions to the unity-community:

  1. i want to create real good, nearly realistic graphical scenes.
what is the best choice for that:
  • the unity-player?
  • flash?
  1. when i chosed my game-platform, must i pay licenses to the platform-manufacturer
to offer my game for this platform?

2a) when there are licenses to pay (microsoft for windows, xbox, ps3 etc.),
is there a way to publish an game in good quality without paying licenses?

thanks for your answer…

for an link i would be glad too…

thanks a lot community!

greetings

re: i´m coming from the autodesk-side (maya and zbrush)

oh you poor thing

re: and i´m interested to create an video-game based on the unity-engine.

youve made the right choice and you’ve come to the right place, your batting 50/50

re: 1

why limit yourself to unity player?

there is unity desktop, player, and all the other target platforms we dare not name.

re: 2

? i guess it depends on the platform.

some of them unity has built in support in unity free (indie) some in unity pro

here learn about free and pro

but for example if you want to sell on cursed store well cursed store will want a cut and they have their own terms

also unity has long list of happy target platform plugins that you can license from unity store.

here check it out
https://store.unity3d.com/

there is a thread about the cost of each of the consoles and such its in this forum somewhere, list look on page 1-3

and then there is unity site

and just because you licensed one of the above addons does not mean you will be able to sell a game through that targets store. you have to make a deal with them. they have terms and cut and perhaps fees.

even if you develop on desktop for windows desktop and want to get on steam you have to deal with steam

and if you get xbox addon you still have to deal with microsoft and whatever they want from you…

and their is no guarantee your game will be sold by any of them. they all have different processes, licensing, terms, fees, cuts.

microsoft used to have very inexpensive program for indie, but sadly they got rid of it.

im not sure what others have for indie. like i said some other thread in this place talking about that. and still you would have to go to each and see…

re: 2a

not that i know of for closed consoles

but on windows desktop, osx and including some phones you can always create executable / installer

but on most phones / phone providers you have to go through some store

i have legally unlocked phone that i can develop on cause i payed for keys to be able to sign an executable for the phone. and the develop kit is free.

but that is outside unity world. i can create an app and install it on my phone and on someone elses phone that is compatible and unlocked, but i cant get it to run on some one phone that is compatible and locked for that i would have to go and make deal / license / keys / dev kit for that provider etc.

but lets ignore phones

why not start with built in ones and then work from there

oh here i found the thread i was talking about, it was right next to this one

http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/207460-So-what-s-the-current-news-on-devkits-amp-licensing-costs-What-s-up-with-previous-gen

but remember

just cause you have unity, and addon a dev kit does not mean you have a game in their store

each step of the way they are going to turn you upside down and shake you and grab the change as it comes out

hi im

thanks for you answer(s) !!

there is an lot to read…
but my first euphoric conclusion seems:

does it all mean, that i can produce an game for windows without buying any licenses from microsoft,
and publish it by my own (without an store or another selling-platform)??

that would be great!

if you want to create a game for windows desktop (not metro modern ui)

and you want to develop in under windows

you need a computer that will run windows and that has some processor, memory, storage, graphic and sound capabilities enough to run windows, unity and your game

and you need a license copy of windows

and if you want to use unity you need at least unity free version (indie)

you can always get pro version

and then you write your game i guess and test it

but then there is a problem how are others going to find it

i guess you can create some stuff on facebook, you can have a web site or a blog, or other other place. hey you can mention it in forums there is place for work in progress and show casing

but then what

i guess you can have people directly buy it from you using like paypal to handle payment

then i guess you can pay $100 to steam and put it in greenlight and hope enough people like it that steam will want you to add it to steam or at least enough come to your website and buy it directly from you, just using steam for sort of advertising your game

but if steam said wow we love it our customers love it then you have problems

if you want it on steam and they agree to greenlit it

you then have to integrate with steam to some extent

and you have to agree to their nda and their terms and their cut, at least 30%, and their fees, like if you want to advertise the game on steam

i guess you can go to other stores like greenmangaming, amazon, microsoft, ea, ubi, etc

and there is like gog and many other like them

you can also do humble bundle and the like

you can even try kickstarter (raise money)

but at the end of the deal every one has their own deal, their own terms, their own cuts and even fees

and each you have to integrate to…

its a lot of work a lot of deal making…

you can always publish it on your own, which is most likely what will happen cause unless its very good nobody will publish it for you. but still having a web site is like if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound, yes but will will anyone hear it, nope

i guess you can spam all the gaming websites / magazines about your game.

you can spam the forums.

you can hopefully become the next notch and minecraft, but dont hold your breath

or you can do a mod for a game and outsell the game like dazy did for arma and have them employee and fund you, dont hold your breath

remember people dont do much on their own, when you hear about notch and rocket their are usually surround by a little group all working with them they are like the front man that you hear about

so its very hard to do much on your own. you need to find a little bit of fellowship of the ring to go along with you on your journey

then ou have to deal with cuts percentages, funding it, contracts, ect. you become more a business man and less time for writing games…

easier to get a job to tell you the truth and you have more chances of making more money, most people dont make it on their own, dont do well.

anways its your life, you use it…

hi im !

thank you very much for your very detailled answers indeed and your help!

yes, i know a little about the “problems to get products selled on the market” (but not in the game industry)

in my earlier life, i´ve been working in advertising a lot, so im familiar with it… crossfingers

and you´re right:
it´s too much work for only one person…
(i´m not an “shiva”-humanoid).

you know im,
i got a good concept,
an definated target audience,
meshes (environment, character)
and i´m looking forward
to build up an small team (coder, rigger, allrounder),
to create this game.

so, when you know some persons of this direction,
which could be interested in some “freelance-stuff”
please don´t be shy, to contact me
