How to repair?

Hello everyone!!
I’m probably duplicating a post but I’m desperate because I really can’t find any kind of solution… as you can see in the attachment after the upgrade of unity I have these errors… however… even returning to the previous version these errors remain… from what I understood… it depends on visualstudio… but even if I put notepad++ I don’t solve… I saw that some have solved by installing newtonsoft on visual studio… I installed them all… and for each one I also deleted the project library folder to see if I solved it… but nothing to do… I ask for your help please… because I’m stuck… I also uninstalled and reinstalled unity and visualstudio… but I didn’t solve it… please intervene…

and
“Ensure the newly embedded package will be added to source control.” are you telling me that I have to make sure I have installed the package I’m interested in like newtonsoft json that I show you in the screenshot???
in my project not have this folder “Assets/JsonDotNet/”
Was it correct to simply rename as I did in the screenshot?? if so this is the result when I try to do the build but I’m sure I missed something

Yes. The Unity Json.NET package you copy from Libray/PackageCache/ into the Packages folder should just be named “com.unity.nuget.newtonsoft-json”.

No, I just mean that if you are using version control like Git, the package you put in the Packages folder should be added to your repository, so other developers on the team will also have those files downloaded into their Packages folder.

After that, you just need to make sure that there are no other copies of Json.NET being included in your project. Sometimes people add Json.NET directly to the Assets/ of the project somewhere. Make sure those are all removed, if there are any. Don’t link Json.NET to the project in visual studio as a Nuget package or anything like that. Then, everything that depends on Json.NET will use what is in the Packages folder, both Unity and your code. So, every module is on the same page and happy with the same Json.NET dependency in one place.

That helps solve errors with Json.NET which seemed to be possibly related to the first issue. However, I’m not sure it’s the issue you’re facing now based on that recent log output. What does it say in the console if you try to make an Android build from the editor?

If you added Newtonsoft.Json as a NuGet package for your solution in Visual Studio, you should not do it that way. Unity is different from a normal C# app. Some of the packages that Unity uses, in the Unity Package Manager, they depend on Json.NET. Sometimes your code also depends on Json.NET. For this shared dependency, you have to get the Unity Json.NET from the Package Manager, then move it from Library/PackageCache/ to Packages/. That is called an “embedded package” in Unity terminology. Then, both Unity and your code will both see that as the one and only Json.NET that they should all be using, so there are no conflicts.

If you want to add other NuGet packages to a Unity project (other than just that very common Json.NET package which has this particular “solution”), you may want to look at using this NuGet for Unity project. https://github.com/GlitchEnzo/NuGetForUnity But, not all NuGet packages will work with Unity.

Yes, uninstall those NuGet dependencies. A Unity solution should normally not have any NuGet dependencies installed. Unity does not read from the solution or project files when making a build, as far as I understand. For Unity you put the dll in the Assets or Packages directory. If it is a dependency that Unity requires, and your code also requires, then you need to put it in Packages as an embedded package that both can reference. If the dll is set to be auto referenced, your scripts in the main assembly can reference it. If you have scripts in other assemblies through Unity assembly definitions, they can be set to reference the dll in the editor. If you have a dll that you need to include with a build, but Unity is removing it during the build process for some reason, like it does not detect a reference to it in your code, you can open the Player section of Project Settings, go to additional compiler arguments, and put: -r:“Directory/MyPlugin.dll” (with the actual path of course.) I haven’t ever needed to do that myself, but it seems to be the current answer. You can also try NuGet for Unity, which I also have not used.

I though you had already done these steps.

That moves the version of Json.NET that Unity may need into the Packages folder. Then, your code can also depend on that same Json.NET package.

I suggested that because the first error you posted mentioned an error with Json.NET. It was just a reasonable guess, but may not be your exact issue. If you are still getting an error I would need a copy of the exact errors you’re receiving to have any new ideas.

  • Open another file explorer window to the “Packages” directory of your project.
  • Copy the “com.unity.nuget.newtonsoft-json@[major].[minor].[build]” package folder from the “Library/PackageCache/” directory to the “Packages/” directory.
  • Remove the “@[major].[minor].[build]” section of the package folder name that is now in the “Packages/” directory.

Copy the com.unity.nuget.newtonsoft-json@[major].[minor].[build] folder

from Library/PackageCache/com.unity.nuget.newtonsoft-json@[major].[minor].[build]

You should now have the folder in both places.

Rename the folder to Packages/com.unity.nuget.newtonsoft-json

That is all. Make sure there are no other Json.NET dlls in your project. Also, no NuGet packages added in Visual Studio.

If you are still having an error trying to make a build, it might be for some other reason.
