Hi everyone, been away a while but I’m back. How do you folks that develop for the iPhone test your apps on the iPad simulator? I’m about a month away from being able to buy an iPad and was wondering how you run it right now? I got version 1.7 of Unity iPhone and it supports the iPad simulator. I understand that not all the features of a real life iPad are supported but some are and I would like to try it out.
Thanks again.
Well, its rather difficult to get a real sense of the size of the iPad and what proportions you should use for your app without actually having the device. I was surprised when I first got to use the iPad, having accuired a preconceived and quite erroneous notion of its size by using the emulator. My advice - unfortunately - is to wait until you get it before doing too much work that might just be a waste of time.
Hi,
to minimize testing outside unity I use some scaling routines for 2D objects (GUI, GUITexture and GUIText) and toggle the target resolution in the gameview window between both devices.
I use scripts the handle the mouse (inside unity) or iPhoneInput (when running on the hardware devices).
Keep in mind that you don’t want to scale all GUI elements by the maximum factor (iPadWidth/iPhoneWidth). I limit the max. scale factor at 2.0.
Scaling the screen layout this way you can easily build a web demo, pc and mac versions.
Good luck
Thanks for the replies, yeah can’t wait to get the iPad. I’m anxious, tried it out in store and it’s a thing of beauty! Thanks for the tips, I’m doing some basic coding right now and will jump onto the big stuff (iPad related) when I finally get the machine.
Thanks again.
