hi all -
how can i upgrade from “5.0.1 p3” to “5.1.1” without downloading 1.5 GB?
You can’t I’m afraid.
‘Upgrade’ systems are tricky to write reliably, and make for all kinds of confusing installation issues! So I’m guessing the unity team decided to keep it simple and make it that you simply re-downloaded unity for the latest version.
They could of course write it (anything is possible) but that’d mean writing and maintaining an upgrade system. Hence less time spent on fancy new features to make our games more awesome. Personally I know where I’d prefer them to spend their time.
I’ve worked in software for over 20 years and “patches” are NOT that hard to do.
If they aren’t already using source control, then God help them. If they are using source control, just flag the updates and bundle them up in a build. I mean seriously guys, this is ridiculous having to re-download the entire IDE and assets, and losing all configurations each time as well. This is going to prevent people from taking the updates until a major release comes along with some new feature. Like this week’s security vulnerability - there are 4 patches released in 1 day?? *8/17/2017? This just looks more like internal disorganization and weak process, NOT technical impossibility or difficulty.
No.
(Can I upgrade my car to a Lamborghini Gallardo without have to spend any money?)
