How to use a texture or a tiled image as a background

In the 3D system it’s easy enough to create a plane (or any other object) and cover it with a texture. Likewise a panel in the UI can be tiled with an image.

But it seems the Sprite Renderer is the only way to show an image in the 2D system, and it’s very limited: one simple image, one colour and one material; no tiling.

I would like to use a simple pattern or a texture repeated for a background, and right now I don’t see how. Is that all there is, or am I missing something simple? I guess I can do my own tiling, but it seems kind of odd.

As far as I know, a quad or plane with tiling would work best. SpriteRenderer does not have that sort of functionality currently. Unity has a bunch of 2D updates in the pipeline, so there may be more support for that type of thing in the near future.

You can mix 2d and 3d (ok, you can not mix physics). Just try plane as background.

And as Jeffreyschoch said, 2D will be updated in future. Check this:

Thanks @vakabaka , it does look like 5.5 may help. I’m not really desperate enough to try a beta though!
