HTC Vive controller - precision?

If anyone has worked with HTC vive controller - how precise is positional tracking on that thing?


Basically what I want to know is whether precise position tracking can be achieved with this or not.

We’ve only done a small amount of work with our Vive so far, but we’ve found it’s very precise provided the cameras are set up in a good location.
We haven’t measured it but I would say it’s in the fractions of a mm range.
The low latency is the part that impresses most, it’s very fluid.

So, basically reported position won’t “fly away” from its actual location after prolonged use or during wide movements.

Correct?

It’s very very accurate and wont float around if your stations room is setup properly.

I haven’t assessed precision in the engineering sense but the optical tracking is not susceptible to drift like pure imu tracking. Positional accuracy is within about 2mm. If you touch two controllers together and look at them through the vive, sometimes they overlap by a couple mm, and sometimes there is a couple mm gap between them.

Once of the first things I did on a Vive was balance one controller in the ‘ring’ of the other, and it was surprising to see how precisely that positioning was reflected in the VR environment.

The tracking is very impressive tracking, assuming well positioned base stations.

Assuming the equipment is working properly, it’s remarkably stable and accurate, in my experience. I’ve seen report where people have repeated problems with tracking, but they’re the exception.

It’s worth noting that there’s a bug that makes one of the controllers be slightly out of place according to which direction you’re facing. But I assume they’re working on that as it’s a well-known bug now.

Looks like a quality tracking solution. IT is just I’ll need to look into something that involves positional data from Vive controller. Needed to make sure that there’s no (significant) chance of data being incorrect.
