Humor Limitation

Hi everyone, im new to game development. I have no background on programing or anything related to game development… I love playing games and i wanted to make games.

Im currently working on a game and planing to publish it on itch.io or any other platform (not sure yet).

The genre is Comedy and i was wondering is there any articles or general/international rules about Game Development Humor limitation? ive seen alot of tutorials, forums, etc. But i never seen any topics regarding about Humor Limitation or maybe im not trying hard enough to find one. My game has some dark humor and sarcastic jokes. (Little similar to Southpark comedy style).

The main concern why i ask about this, i dont want any problem with goverment, any law enforcement or anything that could lead me to serious charges.

Thank you and i hope you stay well and Stay safe during this Covid-19.

Sorry for my bad English… English is not my main languange…

It would depend on your country. In most of the western world, free speech is heavily protected. From f the government to straight up heil Hitler. Short of actually threatening someone or showing anything graphic,1 you won’t get in trouble.

I personally enjoy dark humor. Cartman feeding that kid his parents is just downright hilarious. But beware of bad writing, South Park works because of good writing. The gag wouldn’t of worked without the absurdity of it.

Yeah i think unless your in crazy country like china that will lock you up for making fun of stuff you’re fine. (Im not being hateful, its a fact)

Theres a GDC talk from one of the guys that made the “Stanley Parable”, one of the funniest games ever created (not counting the south park games cus you need to watch the show to get all the jokes)

The best humor pushes boundaries and makes you think. Some people are uncomfortable about their boundaries pushed, and don’t want to think when it involves reevaluating long held beliefs or positions. So there is always an inherent risk with good humor. Whether it be a legal risk, or risk of the twitter mob coming after you, depends on the topic, who/what you are poking fun at, your local laws, and who is enforcing those local laws.

All time best episode!

“Do you like it? Do you like it, Scott?”

If you plan on selling your game though, check out the rules of the platform. Private platforms are free to censor whatever they want. Freedom of speech only refers to government. Some stores don’t… isn’t there a school shooting simulator on steam? Some censor heavily: Nintendo. Different business models.
