Just a small logo scene sample from a port in progress
Demo Demo Demo! This looks cool. Very cool… I once saw an arcade video game that had a huge bowling ball thing implanted in a table, and when you rolled it, it rolled a bowling ball thru the streets of SF avoiding cable cars and people. That would be a cool thing, obstacles.
Yep, that’s the same game, HyperBowl. It was part of the Sony Metreon release in 1999 and is still around in various places. I just played it in a Dave and Buster’s a couple of weeks ago. (The attraction/arcade version is still maintained by Jesler Enterprises)
There was a PC version released in various editions - you can still find a free demo on the Internet that plays the first bowling lane (San Francisco is the fifth, I think - that one and Tokyo, the sixth are gonna be the most involved to reconstruct). I was one of the programmers on it back in 2001 so the developer, Hyper Entertainment, is graciously letting me take a crack at getting it running with new tech.
I’m still working on this, but a playable (I hope) version is available as a web player on http://www.hyperbowl3d.com/
The only browser that seems to have problems with it so far is IE8, which doesn’t respond to the mouse control (although it displays the credits video OK while Windows Firefox and Chrome don’t)
I listed http://www.hyperbowl3d.com/ on the Dreamhost Site of the Month list, so any Dreamhost customers out there (I know there’s at least one), if you have time, take a gander and cast a vote (be honest, not asking for charity here) And list your own sites, too - it’s be great to see a Unity site (and not another Flash site) win!
By the way, I worked around the mouse-responsiveness problem in IE mentioned in the previous post by locking the cursor - somehow that makes it better.
Updated http://www.hyperbowl3d.com/ with a new look (well, really the original PC game screen background), Unity features not available in the original game engine circa 1999 (dynamic shadows, bump maps, water), and that IE/Unity 2.5.1 workaround.
Also, a short video on YouTube

I also submitted a widget of HyperBowl Classic (Featured Widget!)
Once in a while, the game seems to freeze temporarily or indefinitely when the ball has rolled past the pins - at the very least, there’s a physics freeze as the ball doesn’t drop. I have no idea what’s happening there (should be just doing a WaitForSeconds just to make sure any pins finish falling). In any case, I just realized I didn’t put a restart button in the widget (the GUI still works) so just a tip - quick restart by flipping to the back panel and then back to the game.
The second HyperBowl lane is now on the App Store:

Cool stuff! Great gameplay!
Thanks! I just put it on GameJolt, too:

(going through the list of Unity-compatible game portals mentioned on http://answers.unity3d.com/ - it’ll be interesting to compare the results)
I got a Developer-of-the-Week interview on AppBoy:
http://blog.appboy.com/2009/11/interview-philip-chu-they-dont-make-em-like-they-used-to/
where I discuss HyperBowl and mention Unity (a bit more than I initially intended to!)
I also talk about a current seasonal promotion where I’m donating 30% of HyperBowl iPhone proceeds to Get Well Gamers, a charity that supplies video games to hospitalized children to assist in pain management. Check out http://get-well-gamers.org/
