I assume id is using Unity for this RAGE iPhone demo.

It says in the small writing that it’s using the id Tech 5 engine. So I assume it has nothing to do with unity. How did you come to that conclusion?

Because id Tech 5 is just a modified version of Unity; they obviously bought the source code license.

if they used Unity, the engine would be meaningfull for more than tech demo and research, unlike id tech 4 and 5 … (mega textures … yeah the easiest way to make badly looking massive terrains as quake wars has shown)

But hey thats the purpose of this thing here too eh? Showing of cool tech demo stuff

Not so much any more. Tech5 will apparently only be available for Bethesda games. It won’t be licensed for third-party games (unless published by Bethesda) any more.

I’d love to believe this, but I can’t find any information on tech5 being built on Unity. Where did you read this?

I can’t remember.

I think IDTech 5 is a modified version of John Carmacks extremely genious brain

and the difference is?

Nobody ever licensed id tech 4 as far as I recall so …
Its with that just slightly below Crytek which is comparable popular.

the sad thing about the fact you stated there is that the chances for id4 become opensource like previous generation is far lower actually

Sure they did. Quake 4, Quake Wars, Wolfenstein, Brink… maybe Prey? Not sure about Prey.

cool

I think that Unity should add ā€œSparse Virtual Texturing - inspired by John Carmack’s descriptions of MegaTexturingā€ to Verison 3.1

It would be amazing to see megatexturing implemented in Unity as a shader of some sort.

Whoa … Seriously …
I call this a performance.

whered you get that idea?

id tech 5 is based off of id tech 4… based off id tech 3. etc. The thought of carmack licensing unity… lol, thats absurd.

So the only people that can code for iphone is unity? please.

The source I provided never led me astray before.

You’ve got to dig a little further. The earlier versions were built on Unity and it just went downhill from there. It’s obvious that their modifications started to lose the spirit of Unity after awhile, as they haven’t made anything good since Quake 1. Carmack should sell his stupid bourgeois car and start all over again, trading the cash for the Unity 3 source code.

Personally i think there is a huge difference from the engine design as well as the user experience. Anyway for the later it feels like this:

When i normally start a Unity game, i expect it to crash at some point or depending on the platform offer at least a number of quirks.

When i start an id game, i just can concentrate on gaming.

id usually delivers where Unity fails since the beginning, on rock solid quality releases which just work. But maybe this will change at some point…

Whilst this technically is impressive i fail to see the practical usage specifically for this title as the multitouch devices lack a comfortable interface for dealing with such action oriented gaming in a reasonable way, compared to a mouse&keyboard combination for instance.

I’m sure it will sell if it doesn’t suck too much but honestly who wants to play Rage on an iPhone when you can get a much better experience on a PC?! Oh well…

Mr. Negativity strikes again  - is this a real grievance or do you just like to stick to us once in a while? Saying that every Unity game crashes is a bit over the top no?

Anyway, on the topic - ID showed a few rooms with some good lightmapping and some random characters wildly gesticulating for no apparent reason. It looks good, but nothing that Unity couldn’t do… well besides the fact that every Unity game crashes, right taumel?

Hi Antenna

Nope it’s not being negative by no means. It’s more based on five years of exerience with Unity and issues i have come around again and again and also expressed my thoughts about here as well.

Unity needs to mature up a lot more than it needs to add more features. It might sells worse if you don’t market it properly but this way it would be much more useful, at least for my stuff, beside of the missing proper text support.

You can also put it this way: In id games the fear comes from inside the games. In Unity driven games it more comes from outside. ;O)
