So I’m looking to try out a new 3D game engine technology that provides mobile and pc platforms, what options are available and what price?
I know about:
Epic’s Unreal UDK and their $99 license with 20% on royalties over $50k (mobile + pc)
Crytech’s Cryengine 3 Free license for indies but 20% royalties (pc not mobile)
Corona is 2D only
Marmelade is no engine, its a crossplatform SDK. Shiva actually can export to marmelade to give you the full exposure marmelade offers
To put it plainly, there just aren’t many products that can do what Unity does, and those that can, aren’t as well established or put together like Unity is. Considering that, the price tag for Unity is well justified (if not even a little low). This isn’t even mentioning the fact that the basic version of Unity is still free!
Torque is one. You’re looking for a new one, you say? I’ve been hearing that there will be a new version of Unity that has great looking new features :).
I don’t understand this. Why not just stick to Unity 3 if you purchased a license for that and don’t want to upgrade? It’s not like anything is going to change about Unity 3 to make it worse, so if you are accustomed to that then just stick to it.
Ohh god , another one of these whining about not being able to afford the upgrade . Odds are you don’t need pro , most other game engines have VERY steep learning curves in comparison to unity . I know since I still have the free IOS and Android 3.5 I’m just going to use that for the forseeable future , at least a year .
We (Unity and I fell in love) I paid for an engagement license but now she want’s more and more so I’m having a look around for a new development engine. Now like any divorce I’m stating to hate Unity but also I’ve noticed that Unity community are also starting to hate me back. Not surprising as they are still probably in their honeymoon phase.
Remember not to pay for a license until you have raised your annual income from using the tool surpasses the upkeep of your business.
So do not try and bootstrap with the licensed version use the Free version only (and save the Pro trial until your ready to launch).
Thank you. I’ll check them out and update the thread with their details others might find this useful.
Unity 3.5 has added a lot of features that are not fully rounded, tested and optimised, those features will be ‘completed’ in the 4.0 release.
PS Don’t expect a New GUI in 4.0 unity have been talking about a GUI for years 2.x, 3.x now 4.x.
@Khyrid, why thank you young man good luck with your FPS. ;0)
