I just want to animate a treasure chest opening.

I have my simple chest opening animation exported into unity, but it won’t play. I understand there is some new ‘mecanim’ feature which seems to be taking up the entire tutorial spotlight, because I cannot find a single one about simply playing my prop animation on start, or invoking it in script. Any tutorial that does this will be appreciated.

When I exported my animation from 3ds Max, I licked ‘animation’ in the FBX options. In the FBX importer in unity, under ‘Rig’, I’ve set the animation type to generic. After that, I’ve dragged my treasure chest into the scene, clicked play, and nothing happens.

In your import settings (Inspector) go to the “Rig” Tab and chose the “Legacy” animation type. Apply that. Go to the “Animations” tab next and make sure “Import Animation” is enable. Check that the “Clips” section actually shows your animation. You can preview it as well. If all done right you can just drag the mesh into your scene and it should play the animation at Start.
