Do you think there’s a market for it out there? I’m planning on making a new game with low pixel graphics as opposed to my other cartoony art style because I’m a huge fan of pixel art. I’m just worried about the market if the style will hinder sales. What do you guys think?
Pixel art’s pretty popular. Tons of big indie games use pixel art: Minecraft, Cave Story, Fez, Lone Survivor, Hotline Miami, etc. So I wouldn’t worry about it hindering sales. If anything, I think pixel art will boost sales.
There’s people that don’t like pixel art/ say it’s lazy but there seem’s to be a lot more people that love it. You’ll do fine, good luck with your game.
I think it COULD be even entirely different. Because reviewers tend to write stuff like “yet another pixel art…”
Because after the success of the games that makeshiftwings mentioned the pixel art market is a quite competetive nowadays.
There’s definitely a market for your game and style, however you gotta excel in it as well to stand apart from all these other pixel games.
Tiny tower and pocket planes, I’d like to add as mobile pixel examples, btw
If you browse the toucharcade forums there’s soooooo many thread with pixel/8-bit716-bit/2-bit/whateverbit in the title, you can see a lot of examples of what your competitors are doing by just taking some 20 minutes and do a little research in the upcoming or released games forums
Well I was looking at a few pixel art games the trailers and what you find is usually you are going to be targeting after older people (people who used to play retro games when they were younger). So you got to think they would be willing to pay more money because they should be wealthier by now then the younger kids.

“Pixel Style” won’t hinder your sales. It’s gameplay for the most part. Your pixel art looks cute and attractive to my eye but you also have to keep in mind that not everybody is into “Pixel Art”. There will always be “haters” and always those who love the looks of it. Don’t worry about the graphics so much, do pixel art if that’s what you’re after but most importantly get your game mechanics to be fun. Visuals can be tweaked/redone later.
just thought id point out, You’re pixels aren’t clean. I can see some 4x4 pixels (correct) then some 4x2/4x3, Also outlining some of them just ruins the entire point of ‘pixel’ art. Just my criticism.
To the question, of course there is a market, and its a good one if you nail gameplay. Currently your art makes me think of a glorified ‘realm of the mad god’ piece.
Clean it up and move on with the project, because I saw you with this art months ago.
If you’re doing pixel art, ie where you really exaggerate the pixels in a low resolution, then you have to accept that it’s an indie game and most likely will not appeal to any of the casual gaming crowd. You’re most likely presenting that art style as a stylising factor, which makes your game artsy, rather than mainstream. It looks cool, for sure, but the audience is smaller than it would be.
Minecraft gets compared just because it is blocks, as if it’s made of big fat 3d pixels… it’s a loose connection I agree.
There will ALWAYS be games with hand-drawn pixel art. Always. It doesn’t matter how many studies or articles or opinions are thrown about by well known people, 2D and pixel-based artwork is going to be here for many many many more years.
I think your art look really good. They have a lot of character to them. I think if you can make the environments and everything else look as good as your characters, you’ll do fine
