When UT launched the “Asset Store” in 2010, I must confess that my first thought it been “Shit, here we go again : another world-compagny-cash-machine-toy”. Three years later, as a developer, I must say “thank you UT for that”. I love this Asset Store. Maybe, my very first reason i’m staying to Unity.
I like the asset store. It’s a great addition to Unity and a whole marketplace of potential earnings for a lot of people which basically didn’t exist before in a cohesive centralized manner. The store itself I think needs a lot more ecommerce features, but in some ways its ultra simplicity/basic-nature makes it fairly easy to use. I put an asset up in October 2012 and it still continues to sell, without me currently doing anything to improve it or market it, which is pretty cool.
Asset store is the best move done by Unity Technologies, including any update they made since version 1, at least thats how i see it. As for engine features it stands next to easy workflow, multiplatform and huge community.
Its still interesting to see that only 1 company so far tried to rip of same idea but it just didnt work since you need mass of users backing it to squeeze full potential.
I’ve said that often but i’ll reiterate it again.
The asset store is what makes unity kickass, buy unity for a flat non royalty price. Buy assets on the store the same way, end up with a beast as nice as the big AAA royalty engines and dedicated per feature support form people with a clue
I do enjoy the asset store. It’s very easy to use and saves a lot of time. I have yet to come across an easier way of getting a 3d asset into my game. Basically one click of the “import” button and it’s in my project.
Only one complaint I have, having used it a couple times now, whenever I’m viewing a 3d model (for instance) and I hit the back button, it takes me back to the top of the page so I have to scroll back down to where I was “browsing” which can take some doing. But this criticism is best for the website creators, and is simply a control thing. It’s only a small complaint.
Anyways, yes I like the asset store a lot, and it is very helpful and can save you a lot of time.
One thing I would like to see would be a “Saved for Later” type feature you see in Amazon. Would be handy, but admittedly not all that important in the grand scheme of things.
I love it, especially how easy it is to update existing packages directly into your project.
Good move by UT, and extends the community and the ability for people to diversify their forms of income.
there is one down-side to it though… there have been some users that have had questions about getting help with small bits of their games being told “if you aren’t willing to buy this package, why should i bother helping?” (yes, this was actually said at one point and the package in question was nearly $100.)
That being said, the negative points are drowned out by the positive points.
The asset store is great because it is for unity (no 3d file conversion problems, one click import, etc), and because it is also moderated, so there is some quality control and testing before releasing the product.
And giving the artists 70%, all while being non-exclusive, is too good to pass up.
As a musician, i really love being here… I started with a few items, old songs composed for never-finished game projects and some of my own old stuff.
I was surprised that it actually worked and someone was buying my music!
Later, i started to make projects specifically tailored for this marketplace, with “a game” in mind… something that could be useful for the developers…
yes, it’s really a nice experience being here!
I love the AssetStore too, as seller and buyer. Its just so rewarding to sell something that helps other devs create cool games. In the mean time I use their money to buy stuff that helps me building a cool game. Its a vicious circle!
im also thinking bout making some stuff specially for asset store , im a 3D artist with some idustry experience but the problem is on what should i foucus on… modular buildings? , small props?, guns ?, is there some statistics which tell u what is most downloaded in “3D art” section? couldnt find one
The menu on the right of the store is (afaik) constrained to the current section, so go to the section of the asset store you care about and i you can see the top paid (i assume top # of customer among paid assets) and top grossing (top # dollar made) assets for the section you care about.
