As the title says, I’m looking for a new computer for game development.
What should I get?
As the title says, I’m looking for a new computer for game development.
What should I get?
The simplest answer is… “The Highest configuration you can afford”.
The latest ones are way too expensive. And the Value addition is not proportional. So I stick to the one just before latest. Ryzen 5 at least, Graphics card with Raytracing (Raden Rx series), at least 32GB of DDR, disk size to match…
Fortunately, Game doesn’t need as much as a video rendering. “Use the HardWare that your game targets”.
depends on the games you develop
BTW, more info and questions, hardware examples here
Platforms you want to target too. Unity allows you to install modules on Windows for macOS and iOS but publishing to the App Store requires you to sign your apps with Xcode which requires an Apple computer.
Well, I have pretty much always been using windows, but I don’t mind switching to a mac.
What’s best?
If you’re a Windows guy, you’d be best sticking to that.
I know from painful experience that Unity, although it works on Linux, doesn’t work very well.
Also, if you do make your own games, WATCH your spelling/grammar when you’re writing code, it’s DEVELOPMENT, not DEVELOPEMENT.
Sorry, I made a typo, my bad.
It’s fixed now.
I was thinking of making a mobile game first, would that be a good place to start?
It’s not going to be anything special, just something that’s fun to play.
Perhaps something like this?
For mobile development you’re going to want to get an Apple computer as you can’t actually publish to the Apple App Store without signing your app which barring a method that breaks the license agreement you have to do in Xcode on an Apple computer.
For iOS development and signing I’m using an M1 MacMini (16GB RAM/1TB SSD) which was around $1,400. For what it cost it’s very slow. I only make builds with it and it’s one-half to one-third the performance of a PC that could be built for the same price.
If I bought another one today I’d aim for at least the M2 Pro MacMini but that would be around $2,000.
Would it be best to buy a windows computer, and then publish my games on Google Play, like suggested in this video?
If not, then I’m just going to buy a mac.
Personally I’d stick to Windows for development needs.
Although Linux actually works and does have its uses.
Would this computer be good enough?
Yep.
Thanks for all of the suggestions.
I ended up buying the latest iMac.
