Hi guys. Some questions, as I finally got word on what’s happening with my school laptop, should I decide to keep it. (I am going to have to, as it’s the only laptop in my posession capable of running Unity 5 and all my other programs properly) What is understandable is that I have to get it fully wiped, due to software licensing. Ok, I can take that. But then they said that they would load the original OS that came with the laptop. Ok fine, not too bad either…
Except, last I remember, the sticker on the bottom is for a windows vista basic key! Does this mean unity won’t offer support for my cases anymore, since they don’t support vista?
Anyway… Fortunately, I might be able to get ahold of windows 10 before then and dodge the vista bullet. Also, do any of you actually have vista and have a working development setup? If there’s anyone in this boat, let me know.
Are you sure they will install Vista on it( worst operating system microsoft came out with) I think with Windows 8.1 you can still get free upgrade to ten. If i was you get the laptop abd then format it yourself as would not trust school IT
Unfortunately, my current win 8.1’s enterprise, so it wouldn’t have worked anyway. And since my IT support team mentioned the original OS that came with the laptop (Of which would have to have been vista, judging by the product key sticker that was there!) Yes… Vista may be the OS I get back when i hand it in to be wiped. Fortunately, I was smart in keeping most of my files in one place this time round, (My user folder, not including programs! ) so backing up should be painless enough.
Actually, one more note; I recieved the laptop in grade 9, all the way back in 2012, and I remember the sticker next to the “Core i3” one saying “Windows Vista Basic” so that would have had to be the original OS my IT support mention. However, my sister’s laptop, obtained one year later, has windows 7 on the bottom…
Have already tried it, it is definitely a nice subsitiute.
Main issue however isn’t just unity, I also have to take into account my other software. Most of my game development stuff (aka. Blender, GIMP, now Unity!) will run on linux, but some of my other stuff is windows-only. (Steam library and other-random-PC-game, I’m looking at you. ;))
