I need a bit of help

First, I just want to say that unity is awsome.

Alright, I need some help with my models in maya 8.5. It says that unity supports mb and ma files but maya will only let me save them as mp files. So my question is how can I make my files mb or ma.

My other question is sort of connected with the first one. Since I couldn’t import my maya models I downloaded blender and when I import the blender model into unity I walk/fall right through it. So my other question is how do I make my imported models solid.

Are you using Maya PLE?

yeah I am

To be solid it needs a Mesh Collider added.

Component > Physics > Mesh Collider.

Keep Use Gravity turned off or the ground will itself fall  And you can turn on Is Kinematic (not sure if that’s important).

Maya PLE is the learning edition and is restricted to the PLE format. pretty much won’t do you any good outside of learning maya.

that’s if you attach a rigidbody. just using a mesh collider should work for the ground though.

thanks for the help guys. I guess ill have to use blender then

blender is a great app with unity. just currently lacks the ability to get animations out of it [easily] but that’s being worked on.

FWIW, if Blender model saving annoys you, try exporting to 3DS. That helped us sometimes.

Regarding Blender, the latest version is 2.44 and it now has native support for .FBX export. As for animation export, there was a recent thread here that the Collada Blender plug in was recently updated and now includes skeletal rigs.

Prior to 2.44 I found exporting .OBJ files more successful than .3DS files. I haven’t had enough time to give 2.44 a thorough test, but when I do the first things I will try is the new .FBX and Collada support.

Oh so it does. I wonder how good the animation support is.

I’m very happy with Cheetah 3D – it’s $129, has seamless integration with Unity 3D (no exporting required, just leave everything it its native format), and is very “Mac-like”.
