I Need Input on Models / Assets

Howdy everyone,
I am trying to get some input on models / assets.

What would you say is an ideal Polygon/triangle count for every day items for 3D games? Under 64k, under 32k, etc. For both PC/console games and mobile games.

What would you say are the most popular genres of 3D games (FBS, Adventure, Simulation etc).

What type of games do you work on most (FPS, etc.).

I want to ensure that the models I create can be used across a wide range of games, other 3D programs, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully answer!

I would suggest you look around on the asset store as a lot of artists post the poly counts there. Looking at the collaboration sectionand at the wider gaming world most people seem to be doing FPS games. However, that’s for the PC. Unity3D tends to rule the mobile gaming front in which case models need to be very low poly. For everyday objects that act as scenery the lower poly the better. Some developers release duplicate packs 1 for the PC and one for mobile devices. It really depends on the model, however, for something such as a couch the effect should be achieved with textures rather than polys, a couch at most should only be a few hundred polys. Go and look at sites like Mr Necturus who does a lot of low poly stuff but pretty detailed characters, or Arteria 3D is another one. Both have been doing stuff for the asset store for a some time, both tend to aim at the PC - both usually have the poly count for a model on their site. Also take a look at dexsoft-games and 3drt, these tend to produce stuff really for the gaming market, usually they also have the poly counts I believe.DAZ and Poser models are way too heavy on polys for games unless it’s a 2D game using rendered 3D art so if you are used to providing stuff for that market well the secret to gaming models seems to be to achieve a lot of the effect done for poser using actual 3D meshes - such as buttons and grid effects - but done with texturing and use of alpha channels rather than building a grid on a model with 10 real slats. I’m sure others would disagree with this, all I can suggest is you look around on the asset store at some of the big art developers and make your own judgement call. One last thing, texture sizes matter as well in the models for mobile devices - a really detailed texture for mobile might be 1024 but really you should be looking at 256 - 512. I hope this helps.

Thank you Sicga123. I will take a look and consider your suggestions!
