Hello mates.
There’s a project that I’m almost certain I’ll pull off and I want to know if Unity is capable of doing so.
The main thing I’m concerned about is the scale since the world is:
1.Going to be a huge ocean with randomly generated islands.
2.Needs to be huge to give it that exploration feel and takes time to sail from one island to another.
3.The game is not centered around the player. Instead the player is just a dot in a fully working economy.
4.Since the economy is a big thing in this game will working with Tile Based maps work or will the whole map need to be loaded?
5.In games like Grand Theft Auto ripples are created by boats and the player jumping into the water. Is that possible in unity?
This is a huge project for me and all these things listed will not be experimented with until I have been through enough tutorials to understand everything Unity has for me. This question is just for future purposes so I do not need to worry.
Thanks.
If you’re still going through tutorials on how to use Unity, I would be careful about your project plans as large games can take quite a lot of time.
I’m currently working on an online first person shooter, with only 3 weapons and 1 map, very little HUD and very few menus and I plan on it taking roughly 2 to 3 months to complete. This is for my senior year culmination project at college (I’m a CS major) and have been using Unity for roughly 3 years.
With that being said, I don’t want this to burst your passionate bubble in any way. Dream big! Everyone does it, just be cautious as I wish someone had said this to me years ago when I was at the same stage you are now.
To directly answer your questions, yes to all. Unity is perfectly capable of accomplishing those things, but many of them require skilled programmers as well as artists. Some of them are easier then you may think, and some of them may be harder then you’re currently imagining.
My advice: write down your game idea, save it on your computer and begin learning Unity now. This will help you shape your game as you become more skilled in using Unity and in understanding how long certain aspects of it will take.
Thanks for the reply.
This project is just a hobby because nobody has currently created this type of game and to be honest…getting sick of waiting.
At the moment I have all the time in the world so I’ll be reading and learning everything I possibly can.
And I’m glad to hear that Unity can hold this. Now I don’t need to worry if it can or cannot.
Thanks again.
No problem, I learned Unity in the same exact way; had plenty of time and a game idea. Before you know it you’ll be making big games, trust me.
Also, check your old post from 2 weeks ago I answered that one as well if you’re still curious about it.
