I think the editor dislikes me.

I think the editor dislikes me. It didn’t used to do this.
I open just a random demo for display:

I compile it:
And I get this: Can anyone help?

Hopefully this is a common error that is run into often, and it can be simply resolved.

What are you expecting to see here? That scene doesn’t have anything in it, except for a camera.

There are pictures in Assets. Perhaps I misinterpreted how this project works, but I’d like to see them in the game?

Well, if that scene file is added to the build settings, and the scene has a gameobject (sprite, quad or something) which has a material that uses the “picture” as a texture, and its in front of the camera’s view, then you will see it in the final built exe. Does the build settings include the scene named “scene” and does that scene actually contain anything to show the player?

PS if none of this is making any sense, visit Unity3d.com/learn and try and get a good understanding of the basics of unity before building stuff out to test!

Having the items in your project is not enough to do anything. You have to first add them to your scene (that’s the panel that says “Hierarchy”).

MD_Reptile has good advice - I recommend to follow the tutorials at the learn link he posted.

Your hierarchy is completely empty. What do you expect to see if you’ve added absolutely nothing to your scene?

Things added in the Assets folder are just assets. They will not show in-game until you add them to you scene. This is really basic, basic stuff. I highly recommend that you do some tutorials: Unity Learn

That being said, it doesn’t look like anything is wrong with the editor. The editor hates people who don’t put anything in the hierarchy
