My previous computer was getting pretty old and eventually stopped working, so I bought the latest iMac instead. The game that I was working on is still on my old SSD I think. I don’t remember saving the game that I was making on any type of cloud saving, I probably should had done that. Can I somehow retrieve it, so that I can continue to work on it on my new iMac?
“The latest iMac” is likely an M1 model. For the most part, Unity 2021.3 LTS or 2022.3 LTS should run fine on an M1.
You say “my old computer” but don’t specify if it was a Windows PC or a MacOS machine, but in either case, you should be able to zip up the entire project folder (the project folder will have subfolders Assets, Packages, ProjectSettings, and others) and copy it to your new machine. It might be really really big; if you absolutely have to get rid of anything, delete just the Library subfolder. KEEP A BACKUP OF THIS ZIP FILE.
If you did have to skip the Library, it could take quite a while to load the project next time; this is normal. If you’re changing versions of Unity, you will probably have some things to fix or correct. If you’re unlucky, it may ask you to go into “safe mode” to make fixes before it can really finish the job.
Don’t delete any backup you made until you’re 100% happy with the new version in the new machine… and then make a NEW backup!
Yes, it’s an Apple iMac M1. My old computer was a windows computer. How do I save my game to a zip file? Also, my old computer doesn’t work anymore. The SSD might still work, though. As for which version of Unity that I’m using, I simply clicked on the download for Mac button to get Unity, so that would be version 2022.3.8f1 LTS.
PROPERLY CONFIGURING AND USING ENTERPRISE SOURCE CONTROL
I’m sorry you’ve had this issue. Please consider using proper industrial-grade enterprise-qualified source control in order to guard and protect your hard-earned work.
Personally I use git (completely outside of Unity) because it is free and there are tons of tutorials out there to help you set it up as well as free places to host your repo (BitBucket, Github, Gitlab, etc.).
You can also push git repositories to other drives: thumb drives, USB drives, network drives, etc., effectively putting a complete copy of the repository there.
As far as configuring Unity to play nice with git, keep this in mind:
I usually make a separate repository for each game, but I have some repositories with a bunch of smaller test games.
Here is how I use git in one of my games, Jetpack Kurt:
Using fine-grained source control as you work to refine your engineering:
Share/Sharing source code between projects:
Setting up an appropriate .gitignore file for Unity3D:
Generally the ONLY folders you should ever source control are:
Assets/
ProjectSettings/
Packages/
NEVER source control Library/ or Temp/ or Logs/
NEVER source control anything from Visual Studio (.vs, .csproj, none of that noise)
Setting git up with Unity (includes above .gitignore concepts):
It is only simple economics that you must expend as much effort into backing it up as you feel the work is worth in the first place. Digital storage is so unbelievably cheap today that you can buy gigabytes of flash drive storage for about the price of a cup of coffee. It’s simply ridiculous not to back up.
If you plan on joining the software industry, you will be required and expected to know how to use source control.
“Use source control or you will be really sad sooner or later.” - StarManta on the Unity3D forum boards
I was already planning to save my game to the cloud, but sadly my old computer stopped working before I was able to do it. It seems like my webmail provider is selling cloud storage for a somewhat cheap price, so I’m probably going to try that for starters. Also the question right now is, how do I get my game back again?
I just tried creating a quick game in Unity. I saved it as a zip file and uploaded it to the cloud on my webmail. I then deleted the game from my computer, restarted Unity hub, downloaded the game from the cloud and put it back in my Unity folder. I then clicked open, add project from disk and it opened the game without problems.
Am I doing it right?
