No this is not true
AssetServer is an integrated versioning system that aside of the files themselfs also is able to syncronize the imported assets which is important for example on art cause your artists can sync in max files etc and you can use them without having 3ds max on your box
Out of experience, its also less troublesome than granting artists access to SVN
But this is it, the Asset Server Client licenses don’t offer more than this.
Prior to Unity 2.6 it was the only way to work with unity on a team at all, since 2.6 its pricing and reasoning are discussable as it has not received any functionality enhancements for several years basically (Asset Server 2.0 and Unity 3 which required an AS client upgrade didn’t add anything new)
although I own and upgraded my AS client: if you don’t need the asset syncing part for more special formats, Pro + SmartSVN is enough to get a nearly as productive and easy to use environment as AS and that without the trouble that you have to host an own server cause unlike unity AS which requires a vdedicated machine, SVN has various repo offerings around the globe
