If you can't make a 1 month game that generates 1.5k from unity free then you do it wrong

Suicide thoughts intensifies

Any thoughts? Does it really work like this?

Best regards.

I forgot to use " in title, and now I can’t change it nor delete this thread.

It’s an objective look at your performance. If you consider yourself a game developer and spent 32+ hours a week doing it then you should have no problem pulling 1500/mo from doing exactly that.

That’s only about $8-9 per hour. Whether it’s worth it is entirely dependent on the country you’re in. For those of us in the United States it would only barely be worth our time as we can make the same amount of money working practically any job (eg McDonalds averages that amount for a normal employee).

@Oskar_Kasprzak Are you a hobbyist? If you have a daytime job (or go to school) and are learning Unity in your spare time while tinkering with game ideas you have, of course you wouldn’t be able to generate that kind of revenue. People overuse the term “Indie” when it comes to game development, so I avoid it for the most part. But I believe hippo’s statement was geared towards professional “indie” developers.

If you’re getting to the point where you think “I want to quit my job at CostCo and make games full time!” then yes… you should have a plan for generating revenue with your games and ideally have already done so. I certainly couldn’t survive off of $1,500 / mo, which would cover my mortgage and maybe my Internet. But others probably could make that work.

The point is, if you want to consider your primary title to be a game developer, you’d better be generating some income. Otherwise you won’t be a game developer for very long…

I am really sorry for my “dictionary” and wrong usage of words, english isn’t my native language so please keep in mind that I don’t want to sound rude or offensive.

@Schneider21

Of course I was rather “joking” more than taking this serious. Found it somehow when I was googling about unity and sent it to my friend (we are making game after our job-time and we’re really starting, no big dreams, we know we should start it low). I just couldn’t stop myself from posting it here and see people response. I just love to read what other people (who are for years into this business) say about it.

Maybe that’s wrong, but I belive I look at this whole thing a little different. It’s a rare thing to see tutorial at YouTube where someone says “okey, so to make our game we need this, this, this, this and this. After we got everything on our >>concept box<< we can start making our game”. It’s more like “okey, first I do this, I got this, so now I am doing this”.

Don’t mind me, I am not even sure how 2nd paragraph is connected 1st one, just wanted to share my thoughts, but I belive that when its about game-making, perspective and mindset are most important.

I’m a hobbyist. I generate about $30 a month from Unity. I refuse to acknowledge how many hours I spend on it. In fairness I don’t spend much of that time actually working.
