Hey guys
I’m a student, currently making a 2D shoot-em-up for class. I’m investigating the use of Photoshop vs. Illustrator for making 2D sprites. I’ve played around with both, and I’m starting to lean more towards Photoshop. Can anyone tell me what some pros and cons are for both?
Depends on what kind of art you’re trying to create, because they’re two completely different types of graphics software.
If you are new to art, I’d say you should try out the Illustrator first. Because from my personal experience, vector art is a whole lot easier to draw and manage than regular pixel graphics.
I’m a programmer who’s quite new to game dev and focusing on the 2D aspects at the moment as a beginner. Instead of using free sprites available online, from the Assets Store or whatever, I’m trying to create my own art using Inkscape.
And trust me, it is very easy to crank out vector graphics in a very short time. Plus, vector is draw-once-and-infinite-number-of-image-size-exports your heart desires.
But… if you prefer regular pixel perfect art, then go for Photoshop. Or maybe even GIMP.
