I'm having a hard time figuring out the landscape, any advice?

So I really want to make a game that’s strongly based on story, and has little detail in the overall world. Much like Journey. And just like Journey, I want the landscape to be beautiful and really match the story (which in my case has a sad and depressing theme). However I’m having a nightmare of a time figuring out which program would be best, and generally what the landscape is gonna involve and look like.

I’ve pretty much got everything else figured out, like the character, the general story and story direction, the upgrade system which will allow the player to progress to different parts of the landscape and uncover the story further, etc.

It would be great to hear any advice you have for me… as long it’s not ‘git gud’.

So you want things like “start in a ruined town, then progress into abandoned farmland…” Etc?

If you have the story fully fleshed out then the landscape should already be an integral part, or are you asking what is the best software to make your environmental assets in?

@ has posted some pretty impressive environment stuff before. He may be able to point you in the right direction.

Firstly I would like to point out that a ruined town would not only consist of many buildings and street layouts, but also then need to be made too look unkempt and well, ‘ruined’. Which would consist of many broken walls, cracks, and even mere wall segments which would require me to visualize how the building looked in it’s proper state to make it a believable ruin. I also forgot to mention that referencing the landscape to the one in Journey meant I want it to look and have about the same feel as journey. So basically a single landmass, like Journey’s desert for example, which is vast and pretty much empty, but has an almost breath taking feel to it. As well as a few distinctive landmarks very tied to the story, which are also very far away from one another. Thus making the player travel to them for a long time, while admiring the empty surroundings and trying to figure out the story from the very start.

And if you think about it in a very simplistic manner, it’s pretty much Journey, only with a different setting, story, characters, and a slightly less cartoon-ish feel to it.

P.S. Yes, I was asking what the best software for the env assets is.

Definitely Blender

You say your asking about software
But everything you describe is aesthetics and how the game feels - which isn’t just graphics/software.
Pick a 3D modeling package and - that one is best. The modeling package you select isn’t going to make the game look any better or worse. It’s the art that is going to make your game look good, and by that I mean your ability to create the art and relay the emotion and feel you want the game to have.
The 3D software isn’t the only thing, you are going to want some great ambiance - emotional music, great camera work, some awesome secondary motion in the environment, and some very good effects that add to the feeling you are trying to evoke.

Some of the best ideas (my opinion) you can consider is some of the secondary actions and animations that are happening in the environments - this really brings the world to life and adds to any landscape - environment setting.
