I’ve decided to make my new website entirely in WebGL. The main reason is that I want to be able to make it in Unity. Then it is easy to port different things to the website such as animations and games. Instead of having little javascript apps etc.
I have some questions which other more experienced people may be able to answer.
Is there a good way to do hyperlinks yet?
Is Unity 5.4 up to the job of producing small WebGL files?
Are there any good examples?
I suppose that’s about it. I don’t really care about it not working in Internet Explorer etc.
One more thing, I thought about would it be possible to make the website VR compatible. i.e. does webGL support VR?
How small? The smallest build you can make is just under 3mb for a Release build (less when selecting Brotli, instead of gzip in the PlayerSettings), but of course for a real world project it will be more than that depending on the engine features used.
there are several Unity WebGL games, mostly on Facebook:
That’s OK. I’m mainly focussing on PC users these days. And also VR. I thought why not do the whole website in WebGL instead of using loads of different things like HTML/CSS/Javascript etc. Also, its a personal website so I don’t have to make it compatible with all browsers if I don’t want to!
Thanks Marco.
I’m not sure Unity’s WebGL is quite there yet. For example it sometimes gets a bit stuck on the “converting assemblies to c++” which takes maybe 1GB of disk space! And the fullscreen button on doesn’t seem to work on Safari. But I have got it working and am just trying to see what I can do with it now.
I hope you carry on experimenting with WebVR!
Another thought is that VR headsets can have a virtual browser window hovering in space. And that browser might also have WebGL content. But would that also be in 3D? Hmmm…
