Well, after 23 days of (trying) to use Unity, I’ve packed it in.
I must say support has been very good, but without an almost immediate fix (or ability to solve the problem), which is mentioned elsewhere, I wouldn’t be able to continue.
I’m not exactly enamoured towards RAD systems anyway, but at least I’ve tried Javascript.
I’ll be either staying with my other multi-format programming system or go back to my Windows-only 3D system.
Anyway, thanks for all the help.
If a moderator could delete my forum account, that would be good.
It seems like the script is correct, but something else is going wrong.
Can you post a project folder. You can use Report Bug.app to send it if you like.
Then i’ll take a look at it.
Also, just to make it really clear, Joe, Aras, and the other otee guys go out of their way constantly to help us with our problems, even when it’s our own goofy fault.
Nothing can ever be done or fixed instantly.
I am sure you understand that and whatever, and I am not so much trying to change your mind as I am trying to convey that the otee guys are top notch and work very hard (inhumanly hard most times) to keep everything running smoothly for us, instead of just trying to sell a product.
Good luck finding that level of support anywhere else!
Anyway, I hope you change your mind, but if not, best wishes.
not to be rude, but why exactly did you declare that your done with unity?? it seems like you like unity as a program, and you had to be aware that negative post would shy away some potential unity users who are here reading it, im sure that the problem can be resolved so theres no need to imply that there is a chance of unsolvable problems with unity to any of the 37 guests to the forum who don’t know much about unity and are still weighing there decision of whether or not to purchase it
i tried my best not to come off rude so i hope i didnt.
@MrTAToad
If you pop in from time to time you might read this…
The transition when you’re coming from something like a Blitzproduct isn’t always that smooth as you’re used to do some things in a different way and some things are actually smoother there but still i wouldn’t give up this fast as if you’re after 3d, unity really is a nice product and as we all suspect a max3d sadly is still far away and there are also things which are smoother in unity already. So also if it takes you longer to get into, it’s worth the effort in my opinion.
@morgansaysthis
I would say he’s allowed to say what he thinks as well as you are. Imagine a list filled up only with those shiny happy people…
I’m one of those shiny, happy people. 8) But I agree with you, Taumel, that occasional complaints not only add spice to the mix, but also can force positive changes to be made. In my job as an art gallery director, I have to listen to complaints once in a while. I hate doing it, but I have to admit that it helps me do my job better!
Having said that, I’ll now say a happy, shiny people thing:
Unity is the only product I’ve ever used where all the people involved in creating it, including the CEO, project leader, programmers and of course all the great users, have personally, patiently and quickly answered my questions. I came here from another GE, where no one EVER responded to a single question I asked. When I first downloaded that program, the docs referred to necessary files that were supposed to be in my folder, but they weren’t there, so I couldn’t even get started. I emailed the company repeatedly, but never got a response. Money straight down the tubes. From there I hopped over to Unity, and never looked back.
I’m going to chime in here and say that the support attitude at OTEE was a huge factor in our adoption. We came from a product where support tickedts required limited tokens, reporting bugs on the forum was specifically forbidden, and communication was in general very difficult.
Even though Unity had a lot of “1.0” qualities when we first discovered it, the energy and positive attitude of the OTEE team won us over. We have complete faith in their abilities and Unity’s future. Sticking with our old technology choice seemed like a doomed route; going with Unity was the obvious solution.
Now if we could only stop doing so much consulting work and spend more time on our own game projects…
I think maybe morgan’s point is that if somebody shows up here and says “Unity’s doing this and it sucks and I hate it right now and will somebody please help me because I’m about to throw my computer out the window…” As negative as that statment is, it still has a sound of somebody who’s still actively engaged in the input/output process as far as communication.
However, when somebody basically says “I can’t stand this program I’m quitting it you’ll never see me again just delete my account” that statement is NOT posted with the slightest bit of effort to get a problem solved. It’s just somebody who wants to complain about their plight without any regard to solving it at that point. I
think the simple way to view it is “What is the intent of somebody’s post?” If it’s to vent frustration as a “cry for help” from peers, I’m fine with that. But if the intent is ONLY to complain and belittle a product, then it ends up just being self-serving and petty.
Well, I hope I didn’t come off rude either. The good news is that I’m a potential new purchaser of Unity and I haven’t been scared off at all!!lol By luck I was able to purchase Maya Complete and Photoshop so with Unity I’m hoping to be learning and making some cool stuff in a snap!! Uh, with some help I hope!!

Agreed, the guys at OTEE really are awesome when it comes to support. They are passionate about what users of their creation come up with, even if it’s a small demo or whatever.
But, no one can expect OTEE or forum users to standby all the time, show maximum effort to help if the developer himself doesn’t show any constuctivity and effort. It’s a two-way thing…
