I open Unity, listened to some tutorials riding to and from work a few times so I knew what to do and now that Im getting started and will finally get inot it and make games beloved… and I have no idea what to do. I cant art or code, I can sorta tell stories but nobody cares too much about that in the face of gameplay so Im guessing I have no right to even ask how to unstuck myself. Do I even belong?
Will I go broke getting assets so I can reach gamedev glory?
I started from many tutorials and failed on the way to learn something useful. I am a C++ programmer of 7-8 years, I know be basics of how to code, but I had to learn new concepts and functions in Unity and switch to C# language. Help me out doing the Junior Programmer Pathway from Learn Unity (official platform). You can also check Unity Essentials Pathway before that because you will find there are also some soft skills that are handy.
In conclusion, what you should know:
What is MVP (Minimum Viable Product), you don’t need graphics at this stage, you work mostly on primitive shapes. At this stage, you will know if your idea is entertaining and you don’t waste much time if not.
What are your goals and how do you want to achieve them (soft skills)? One of my goals was to play an active part in the forum, I help others and try to learn from others.
How to organize time and stick to a time schedule. In basics, we have preproduction, production, and postproduction parts (look at the essentials link above). If you plan everything in preproduction don’t add new ideas during production, this extends your work time to neverending. Keep new ideas for updates.
Do you need help with your start project? PM me on the forum, I try to help because I lack ideas and maybe this is my purpose to move on. There is also such a goal on my list to take part in some shared project.
