OK. I am starting to study unity 4.
1st question:
Many tutorials are still on 3.5. Can i use those tutorial?
2nd:
On digital tutors intro to unity. The teacher use of 3ds model to create an environment? while on lynda it uses the terain editor? Now this is very confusing. You can use the 3ds model to create a terain. So what should i choose? what are the PROs and Cons of using one than the other? Should i rely on terain editor or create my own using 3ds model?
3rd:
Any guide on where should i start? I mean after completing the beginner tutorial? where should i move next? Lights? animation?
Hello - First, this is not a complete answer. Second, Unity Questions is a place where you should ask technical questions regarding unity, for questions like seeking guide, it’s better to ask them in the Unity forums
However, I will give you what I know, regarding your first question: Yes, you can still use those, Concept-wise, concepts remain the same. Technical stuff-wise, there are some added features over 3.5 like the Mecanim system, particle system, etc. so it’s better to stick to new ones if you could.
Please be careful what tutorials you choose to learn from, there are a lot of low quality ones (not gonna mention names) - Check out the bottom of this answer here, for a comprehensive and good list of good quality tutorials.
About your 3rd question: Unity officials is a great source to learn from, they keep their stuff updated. My advice is to focus on programming first, get it all right and tight. before you hop into Unity. Good thing about Unity is that things are not tied to each other, there’s no specific order to learn Unity - But programming always comes before anything - Good luck!
1- Yes you can follow any 3.5 tutorial to learn the basics. Unity 4 introduced some advanced features but the basic engine is the same.
2- You can use the method most convenient to you. Unity has an inbuilt terrain editor, however if you need other types of environment, you can use any other 3D package.
