Since I’m a beginner, I would much prefer if I could have help on building a game with others who are much more qualified than I am. The purpose of my game is for teaching and I would like to try to use a small portion of the profits to fund my study abroad. The problem is that I am afraid that my ideas will be stolen. I am aware of NDA, but I’m not sure how that works when you do it online. Hopefully there’s someone out there who is familiar with this issue and knows how to avoid it? I have 1 year and a half, so hopefully I can at least try to get this game kickstarted by then. Thanks for reading! ![]()
Beginners are often afraid their ideas will be stolen. In reality this is almost never true (at least, not before your game is published — after it’s published, if it is successful, it will be cloned quickly).
Ideas are cheap. Everybody with the skill to develop something has way more ideas than they have time to develop. So you really shouldn’t worry about it.
If you hire a professional to help, then yes, you should (both) sign an NDA. This is standard practice and the consultant you hire will be able to prepare this for you. (If he/she seems hesitant about that, hire a different consultant!)
If you’re not planning to actually hire someone, but instead want to find collaborators to work for revenue share, well, that’s likely to be difficult, since (as above) anybody you would want to work with probably has their own ideas they like even more than yours. But sometimes it can work. In this case though you’ll have to somehow even convince them to take the time to explore your idea, which means publishing and promoting it, most likely without the benefit of an NDA. But that is OK, because it’s extremely unlikely anybody will want to steal your idea.
Good luck with your project!
Thanks JoeStout.
Thing is, I’ve been working on this game using a different system, so I have to rebuild it all over again. I wouldn’t mind hiring a team, but I have a very low budget to work with, so I doubt it would be worth it. I will still be working on my own game and working through exercises to learn the program in 2D building, but hopefully I can grab some help along the way. I appreciate the help. ![]()
I completely agree and understand where you are coming from. I do have a small budget to work with, but it is rather small. I do plan to learn the program myself as I try to get some help. My main concern was with a patent and thievery. Thanks for the input though!
