Hello everyone! I’m working on a project with several other people and I’m the only one running into a problem. We have several Maya files (.mb) that just don’t want to import into my install of Unity. It’s giving me the notification that it stopped trying to import the file because the importer crashed on it last time. I’d copy the exact error but it’s hanging while trying to import the project again… I have Maya 2009 installed on my PC and I can open the files that won’t import just fine within Maya. Also, when I drop into game mode, it just has a camera view since one of the models that wont import is our main character. Any other ideas here? This is causing me considerable problems when trying to do level designs.
PC Specs:
Intel Core 2 2.4 GHZ
4GB Ram
Win 7 (All relevant programs set to run as admin)
Unity 2.6.1
Avira Antivirus (if that makes a difference)
One last thing, I’ve run into this issue on 2 different computers and 3 different operating systems. It has to be something I’m doing but I sure can’t find it. Thanks for the help!
Wow… the response has been overwhelming…
When you import a Maya file (.mb or .ma), Unity automatically converts that into a .fbx file. So it’s important to know which version of the Autodesk FBX plugin is installed, as well as the version of Maya.
Unity 2.6 supports the FBX 2010 plugin. So if you are importing the asset while the 2011 plugin is installed, that could be a cause of the crash.
Double-check your FBX plugin version. If it is 2010 then Unity is having some problem with importing it, which is a bug and we should fix it for 3.0. To fix it, we’ll need you to use Help->Report a Problem to launch the bug reporter and attach the files that are crashing Unity.
Thanks for the response. I apologize for my lack of patience but this problem is causing me a ton of frustration and inability to do my job. Is there still a place to get the 2010 FBX plugin? I’ve been searching all over and I can only seem to find the 2011.2 version. I’m using Maya 2011 now (just got upgraded) and its looks to have 2011.1 FBX plugin installed? Should I go back to Maya 9?
Have you tried just exporting the maya file as .fbx? This usually solves the problem for us.
I can import FBX files. The problem I have, though, is that several of the prefabs were made with the .mb files. I’m afraid to break something thats working for everyone but me. I’m going to talk to my boss about it but that may be my only option. I’ve got Maya 2011’s FBX import plugin set to act like FBX 2010 (not sure if that works or not) but its still hanging on import.
Maybe I’m missing something here. When I import a .mb file, should it open Maya? It seems like I’ve heard that a few times. It never does that. Is there some setting I’m not activating? It also doesnt matter if I already have Maya open. It still hangs. I’m trying to import right now and its hung on a .mb file.
The problem has to be with me. Each of the other users on this project are importing these files just fine. I’m the only consistant thing with this issue.
Still having the same issue. I’ve got the FBX exporter to do 2010 but still no good. I’ve also wiped and reinstalled Win7 on this box. Basically, it looks like no matter what I do, I will be unable to import .mb files. Any other suggestions on getting these files imported? I can’t even get inot the project anymore due to it hanging on the .mb file imports.
